We go beyond buzzwords and greenwashing. Our standards are grounded in science, transparency, and Hawaiian values of malama ʻāina (care for the land).

 

 

1. Reef Safer™ Formulas

We use the term Reef Safer™ because "reef safe" has no legal definition and is often misused. All Makai sunscreens and body care products are:

  • Free from oxybenzone and octinoxate (banned in Hawaii)

  • Free from avobenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, and other chemical UV filters

  • Free from ingredients known to damage coral DNA, inhibit coral reproduction, or disrupt marine ecosystems

Our products are safe for reef use and safe to rinse into freshwater and septic systems.

 

 

2. Hawaii Compliant

We are committed to protecting the islands we call home. All of our products meet or exceed Hawaii’s environmental and labeling laws, including bans on specific sunscreen chemicals.

We actively stay ahead of new legislation, with a firm commitment to protect both ka moana (the ocean) and ka ʻāina (the land).

 

 

3. No Endocrine Disruptors

Our founder’s personal journey began with health challenges linked to common personal care chemicals. That’s why we go beyond the usual bans:

  • No parabens

  • No phthalates

  • No synthetic fragrance

  • No PEGs, DEA, or SLS

  • No hormone-mimicking preservatives or fillers

We believe in protecting your long-term health, not just your skin’s surface.

 

 

4. Whole-Body Wellness

Our Ocean-Botanical Blend is designed to nourish, balance, and protect. Ingredients like tulsi, wakame, green tea, chamomile, and aloe are not just soothing—they’re clinically supported for anti-aging, hydration, and inflammation reduction.

Where possible, we use bio-based, plant-derived, and organic ingredients without compromising on performance.

 

 

5. Clean Packaging

Luxury shouldn’t come at the planet’s expense. That’s why our products use:

  • Glass wherever possible (serums, CC creams)

  • PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) plastics for tubes and bottles

  • Biodegradable, recyclable, or refillable packaging options

We also minimize our use of inks, dyes, and single-use plastics in shipping.

 

 

6. Science Over Marketing

We don’t formulate for fragrance or foam. We formulate for results—and for respect. We invest in:

  • Peer-reviewed ingredient research

  • Transparent labeling with no hidden “fragrance” catch-alls

  • Minimal but effective ingredients in every formula
